    One thing I like about your videos you don’t talk down to others for not yet understanding, like a kid is never mocked or ridiculed for not knowing the answer to something it makes you feel good to admit ignorance. Also very scientific, like what’s actually going on and the processes involved if we look inside the cement with a microscope? Because those little shapes low and behold are holding the whole thing together large aggregate down to the micro particles like a fractal pattern. You make learning exciting honestly while being technical yet fitting for beginners. Really well blended personality holds strong like a good concrete mix! Rock on brother B)

    I'm just curious how this would work for wet curing. Lets say I build out a small slab for a resident client and I use burlap and plastic for the curing. Would I then ask the homeowner to keep watering the slab or would I have to keep driving back and watering it to keep it damp? lol

    Dr Ley, love your outreach and insights. When designing mooring systems for large bulk Carriers/container ships I always approached the problem by the kinetic energy and then energy absorption through deformation. You may have been simplifying for the general audience. BTW The reactive forces get very large. The slow 10 mph you describe would be very fast considered an aberrant landing that would be rare and you were going to destroy something, try to do it in a semi controlled repairable way. Typical landing would be closer to 2 mph. Besides the obvious structural solutions of carefully designed sacrificial energy absorbing structures I think the overseers need to carefully consider mandatory tug assist and reduced speed limits inside these harbors. Oil tankers with tug assist out of prince william sound have virtually eliminated the problem of running aground.

      You should see the performance with fiber reinforced concrete. It is really impressive. Slab on grade don't need a lot of steel in them. There has been fiber reinforced slabs with no rebar in place for more than 20 y in heavy use areas and they work great.

    Ok Tyler, do a Long term study on wear comparison of concrete that has been repaired during installation, either a boot step or tire track, and regular untouched area free of disruptions. Also has there ever been a study of durability between equal tests of concrete during different moon fazes, be it full moon vs less moon?? Would it make a difference to the moisture content?

      Q1 - People have done this in Minnesota on MnRoad. This is where you can make experimental pavements and then divert heavy traffic on them to see how they perform. They do great. Q2 - I am not sure I am tracking. I don't think it will make a difference.

    Internal curing (a new one) with porous wet rock: this may be the modern equivalent of the age old masonry technique of submerging the bricks or other materials in water before application. Bricks are a porous, masonry sponges of sorts. I soak all and any brick or rocks that I mortar... So I may be on to something.

    Unfortunately, I think this project will increase the total CO2 emissions - the total CO2 emission will increase. Reason is, now people will save a lot on their concrete work, and concrete will be more competitive, and people will use even more concrete. So when we only look at the emissions, they will increase. We see this with cars too. Cars are using less fuel than they used 10 years ago, and many are now electric. Still, the oil consumption has globally increased with 10%, from 90 million barrels a day to 100 million barrel a day.

    • @TylerLey
      @TylerLey 9 дней назад

      Some of the things that we talked about in the video reduced the amount of concrete used by increasing the flexural strength or changing the structural system. If concrete becomes more competitive and is used in a higher volume then that is a good thing because this concrete will be a long lasting structure for a great value.

    If you feel good about these things, have in mind, China is burning 4.2 billion tons of coal each year, and increasing fast. India is burning 1 billion ton, and increasing even faster. So what is the point really, that we are saving a few million tons of CO2? Not much, not much at all.

    Asphalt per ton CO? Parking lots roads etc mostly asphalt. Subslab soil compaction is critical no clay organics . This will allow reduction in slab thickness without subsidence. Many foolishly skimp on proper floor slab soil and compaction. Meanwhile China ,India etc total disregard for environmental laws.. Do you have any data on using Beach sand coquina as aggregate ? LMFAO, Concrete has more than one ingredient you know there are several things that go into making it and when you add water it starts the processes by activating the ingredients and it starts to "go off" or harden, the dry pour method will never setup or bond well. It will cost you lots of money in the end. I would NEVER waste my time or money doing this stupid dry pour method, Yes there is NO place for dry pour and will never work or last as long as you think. Dear Dr. I have question about footing dowels, if the building is a high-rise building ( like 30 stories) then the footing dowel length is governed by tension development length rather than compression development length (ACI 318-19 Section 25.4 ). That's because of overturning moment from lateral loads is governing the design over gravity dead load. Do you agree? I think so because ACI 318-19/ 18.13.2.2 "Longitudinal reinforcement of columns and structural walls resisting forces induced by earthquake effects shall extend into the footing, mat, or pile cap, and shall be fully developed for tension at the interface."
